Babies and young children can
quickly suffer damage from sunburn and heat stroke. Sunburn can cause pain,
fever, dehydration, and also increase their risk for melanoma. Below is a list
of important precautions to take for your child's protection :
- Keep your baby out of the sun as much as possible in the first six months.
- Try to go outside either in the morning or
late afternoon when the sun is not at its peak.
- Be very careful when going outdoors to keep your baby in the shade
- Make sure they are dressed in lightweight clothing.
- The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the use of sunscreens for infants. Use a "broad spectrum” sunscreen of at least 30.
- Apply 15-30 minutes before going outdoors and again every 2 hours.
- Use a hat and sunglasses for your baby.
- Make sure your car is cool before putting your baby or child inside.
- Offer your child plenty of liquids to stay hydrated.
