Baby boys are born with a foreskin that covers the head of the penis. The foreskins purpose is to protect the glans of the penis to keep it soft, moist and sensitive. Circumcision is the removal of foreskin surgically.
Approximately 55% to 65% of all newborn boys are circumcised in the United States each year. Typically, circumcision is performed for religious beliefs or social and cultural reasons. The procedure is normally performed within the first several days of the child's birth and in the hospital.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), circumcision is not medically necessary though the benefits may outweigh the risks. The AAP leaves the decision to the parents.
Regular bathing provides appropriate cleansing for an uncircumcised penis. Do not retract the foreskin.
