Other questions you may have involve care immediately after birth. Below is some general information regarding standard processes during and after hospitalization.
Typically, the hospital will ask the name of your Pediatrician when you are admitted to deliver your baby. If you have complications during birth, a staff Pediatrician from the hospital may conduct a medical exam. If you do not have complications, a standard exam will usually take place within the first 24 hours of birth. This is when the baby will go through a series of tests that screen for hearing, jaundice, thyroid and other disorders.
Many Pediatricians examine newborns before they are discharged from the hospital. This will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have, and to find out when your Pediatrician recommends the first scheduled office exam.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a check-up within forty-eight to seventy-two hours after your newborn is discharged from the hospital. During the first year, your baby will most likely have scheduled visits at two and four weeks, then at 2, 4, 6, 9 and 12 months.
