It can be alarming and even stressful when you notice your child has a fever, but typically it is not something serious. Fevers do not cause any harm and can be considered a good thing because it's the human body fighting off an infection. A fever is not an illness it is typically the symptom of another problem.
What causes a fever ?
- Most fevers are caused by an infection or other illness.
- Some children may get fevers if they are hot or overdressed.
- Babies and children may sometimes get a slight fever after having a vaccination.
When to call the doctor ?
- If you have a baby three months or younger with a rectal temperature of 100.4 F or higher, call the doctor or go to the emergency department immediately. For infants, even a slight fever can be a sign of serious problem.
- If your child is older and has a temperature of 102 F or higher, contact our offices.
- Do not give any medicine without speaking first to your physician.
How to ease your child's symptoms :
- Offer plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
- Make sure the temperature in your child's room is comfortable.
- Dress your child in lightweight clothing.
- Make sure your child gets plenty of rest.
- Keep your child home from school if they have a fever.
