Bathing can be an enjoyable time and a wonderful way to strengthen your attachment and bond with your newborn. Some babies are soothed by the warm water while others need a little time to get used to it. Below are some common bathing questions and tips to keeping your baby clean and content.
When should I start bathing my baby ?
If your baby is full-term and healthy, it is best to give him a sponge bath in the first week or for five days after your baby’s umbilical cord falls off, and the area heals. Then you may start giving your newborn tub baths. It is important to choose a time of day when you are not expecting any interruptions when your baby is alert, content, and between feedings.
How do I give my baby a bath ?
Sponge baths :
- Make sure to use a warm, damp washcloth and the kitchen sink or a small plastic baby tub.
- Use a cleanser formulated for babies or Dove unscented soap. Avoid products made containing alcohol or perfumes.
- Make sure to wash his face, hands, body, and genital area thoroughly. Use a towel to pat him dry. Gently lift him from the tub and wrap him up securely to keep him warm.
- You may apply a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturizing lotion immediately after bathing that can help prevent dry skin.
Tub baths :
- First, get the bath prepared and gather all supplies. Fill the tub with about 3 inches of warm water, approximately 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Test the water before you place your baby in the tub.
- Undress your baby and immerse him in the water slowly feet first, using one hand to support his neck and head.
- Gradually, pour cups of bath water over him during the bath, so he doesn't get cold.
- Use mild, unscented soap or a baby formulated cleanser then wash from top to bottom, front and back. Rinse your baby thoroughly.
- Carefully lift him out of the tub, wrap your baby in a hooded towel and pat him dry.
- You may apply a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturizing lotion immediately after bathing that can help prevent dry skin.
How often should I bath my baby ?
While you can give your baby a bath every day, twice or three times a week is sufficient for keeping your newborn clean. Between baths, be sure to wash your baby’s face and hands regularly and clean his genitals and bottom after each diaper change.
Important Bath Safety and General Guidelines
- Never leave your baby unsupervised. A baby can drown in less than 60 seconds.
- Do not put the baby in the tub with the water running.
- Always, test the water temperature before you immerse your baby.
- The use of powder on a daily basis is not necessary. Talc can be dangerous if inhaled by an infant.
- Use a washcloth to clean ears, nose or other body openings. Never poke or probe those areas.
- After bath time is a good time to clip your babies nails because they are soft, and your baby is relaxed. Use a nail clipper. Cut nails straight across.
