Influenza, or the "the flu” is a very contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract.
Although, it can affect all ages, children often get the flu more than adults.
It can be spread easily in a classroom, by a sneeze or cough, and through
contact with another infected person. Some parents mistake the flu for a
stomach bug. However, many of the symptoms may seem similar. Typically, flu
symptoms will last about a week but it can take longer for some children to
recover.
Flu symptoms in children :
- Fever
- Nausea
- Muscle aches
- Dizziness
- Stomach pain and vomiting
- Sore throat
- Headaches
- Tiredness
- Cough
- Chills and shakes

- Symptoms listed above seem to be getting worse
- Fever lasting longer than three days
- Child has a high fever with a rash
- Difficulty breathing
- Ear pain
- Persistent cough
- Seems lethargic and extremely tired
- Child seems confused
- Has a Blueish skin color
Tips for calming flu symptoms :
Typically, the flu
does not require medical treatment. However, there are some things you can do
to help care for your child.
- Plenty of liquids.
- Plenty of rest.
- Give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for achy muscles.
- For very young children use a nasal bulb to remove mucus.
- Speak with your doctor before using any over-the-counter medications.
